Mild sleep apnea can lead to cardiovascular disease by increasing arterial stiffness. People with OSA or obstructive sleep apnea may not be aware they have sleep apnea. Being severe enough, sleep apnea can affect daytime alertness or create other cardiovascular disease risk.
Doctors have studied patients with and without sleep apnea symptoms. The study found a significantly higher arterial stiffness in the high-risk populations compared to the group without the disorder.
